终，父母之丧。远，祖先。语出《《论语・学而》：“慎终追远，民德归厚矣。”指依礼慎重办理父母丧事，祭祀要诚心的追念远祖。《唐・张说・唐故夏州都督太原王公神道碑》：“皆笃行纯孝，慎终追远。”后亦指慎重从事，追念前贤。或作“谨终追远”、“追远慎终”。
